Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
