Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
